SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Gators dropped their final two matches of the 2014 season at the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament, falling by identical, 3-1 scores to Oberlin and Wooster to close the tournament hosted by Wittenberg University.
Junior
Bailey Gawley finished the two-match schedule with 22 kills, averaging 2.75 kills per set while scoring three blocks. Junior
Julia Weeks added 11 kills while Gator first years
Leah Franzluebbers and
Hannah Cubarney added eight and seven kills, respectively while tallying two blocks each. First year
Justine Kelly posted 50 assists while senior
Catherine Kasianowicz recorded 50 digs. Freshman
Terra Schall,
Kylee Karczewski and
Christa Cash earned 17, 15 and 13 digs, respectively, while Kelly added a team-high three service aces. Junior
Sarah Swartz led the squad with six total blocks, including two solo stops.
Against Oberlin, Allegheny grabbed a 25-21 first set lead before a back-and-forth second stanza. Holding an early, 5-1 advantage, the Gators watched as Yeowomen slowly chipped away before taking their first lead of the set at 9-8 and never looking back. Allegheny tied the match at several points, including an 18-18 and 23-23 stalemate, but a two-point Oberlin swing put away the Gators in the second and evened up the match.
Trailing, 12-10, in the third set, Oberlin used a 15-3 run to take the set, 25-15 before erupting for an early 6-3 lead in the fourth, building a 14-8 lead midway through the set and holding off a late Allegheny rush to clinch the set in four sets, 25-18.
The Gators responded from a five-point run in the first set against Wooster with a four-point run of their own to take a 7-6 advantage. But in a set with one strong scoring run after another, the Fighting Scots used a 8-1, set-closing run to pick up a 25-15 win in game one.
Allegheny erupted out of the set break to take a 7-1 lead in the second. The Gators continuously rebuffed any Wooster comeback attempts until a four-point swing gave the Fighting Scots an 18-17 lead. The Blue and Gold responded with a set-ending run of their own, taking an 8-4 run down the stretch to tie the match with a 25-22 second-set victory.
Wooster held a 12-8 advantage in the third set, but the Gators clawed back to within three at 19-16. A three-point run by Wooster put the Fighting Scots up, 22-16, as they held on and withstood a 4-1 run by the Gators to win the third, 25-20. Picking up an 8-3 lead in the fourth, Allegheny watched as the Fighting Scots went on yet another scoring run, a 7-2 streak to take the lead, before responding with three points to take back a two-point advantage.
Trailing, 18-17 after a kill by Gawley, Wooster ended Allegheny's season with a match-ending seven-point run, clinching the match with a 25-17 fourth set decision.
The Gators end the 2014 season with an 18-15 record, the best finish for the program since the 2005 season.
