Kenyon Tops Gators in Double-OT

GAMBIER, Ohio - After coming back from a pair of deficits in regulation, the Gators saw their two-game winning streak come to an end in heartbreaking fashion, falling 3-2 in double-overtime at North Coast Athletic Conference rival Kenyon.

Trailing 2-1 with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation, senior Jaymee Wallace scored to force overtime, but five minutes into the second extra session, the Ladies' Becca Romaine would score to give Kenyon the win in a crucial early-season NCAC match up.

Kenyon's Maggie Smith got her squad off to a fast start, scoring the game's first goal just 1:34 into the opening stanza.  Allegheny wasted little time to answer, however, as senior Greta Hilbrands buried a penalty kick in the 10th minute to tie it up.

The Gators recorded four more shots over the first half, while holding Kenyon to just two, but were unable to convert, with Ladies' goalkeeper Alyssa Poolpol making a pair of saves to keep the game deadlocked at the intermission.

As was the case in the opening stanza, the Ladies started strong in the second half, as just three minutes into play, Katie Hoener gave the hosts a 2-1 lead after sending home a corner kick.  Kenyon continued to press, but Allegheny keeper Gabby Curtis made a pair of saves over a five-minute span to keep the deficit at one heading into the final 30 minutes.

After Curtis' third save of the half, the Gators went on the attack, with Wallace's goal, assisted by Jessie Thiessen, tying the game in the 79th minute.  Moments later, Poolpol was forced to make a save on a shot by Liana Leja to keep the game tied, while the Gator defense blocked a header on the doorstep off of a Kenyon corner kick in the 84th minute.  With just over a minute left to play, Thiessen was denied of her second goal of the game, with Poolpol making the stop to send the game into overtime.

Play was essentially even over a defense-heavy 90 minutes of regulation,  as both teams had three corner kicks, while Kenyon held a slight 11-9 margin in shots.

In the first overtime, Curtis made a pair of big saves with five minutes left to keep the game tied.  In double-overtime, the Gators posted the first two shots, but Kenyon would end it on Romaine's goal from 10 yards out with 4:25 left to play.

The Gators had three players credited with three shots, in Thiessen, Wallace, and Niki Augustine.  Curtis, the reigning NCAC Player of the Week, finished the afternoon with seven saves, as Allegheny was outshot 16-12 in the 115-minute affair.  Poolpol made five saves to earn the win.

Allegheny will look to bounce back on Wednesday, Oct. 7, hosting Fredonia State in non-conference play at the Robertson Athletic Complex beginning at 4 p.m.
