Layman Nets Game-Winner At DePauw

GREENCASTLE, Ind. - Behind Brianna Layman's goal in the 78th minute, the Gators extended their winning streak to four with a 1-0 road win over DePauw University.

Senior Gabby Curtis made four saves to notch her fourth consecutive shutout in goal, as the Gators improved to 12-5, and 5-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, and remain tied atop the conference standings with two matches left on the season.

DePauw (4-7-2, 2-2-2 NCAC) owned the possession through a very defensive first half, as they held the Gators without a shot until the 29th minute, when Olivia Cushman's effort was saved.  In all, the Tigers held a 4-2 edge in shots in the opening stanza, with Curtis making three saves to keep the game scoreless as it entered the intermission.

The roles were reversed in the second frame, as the Gators held the majority of scoring chances from the outset. DePauw keeper Sarah Cho made a pair of saves in a five-minute span, on shots from Liana Leja and Sarah Donohue, to keep the game scoreless with just over 20 minutes remaining.  Allegheny continued to slowly gain the momentum, and four minutes later, an offensive surge resulted in Layman's decisive goal.

With 15:50 remaining, the Gators were granted a corner kick.  The initial header off the corner by Liana Leja was saved by Cho, but the Gators were able to maintain possession deep in Tiger territory. A minute later, Cho made another stop on a Jaymee Wallace attempt, but the ensuing Tiger clearing attempt went right to Layman on the doorstep, and the junior cashed in with the eventual game-winning goal with 11:19 left in regulation.

Allegheny would hold onto possession for the next five minutes, until DePauw put together a last-gasp scoring effort with just under three minutes left.  The Tigers were granted a pair of corner kicks in a 45-second span, but with 2:25 left, Curtis made the game-clinching safe on just the Tigers' second shot of the half to thwart the DePauw threat and seal the victory.

In the second half, Allegheny out-shot the Tigers 8-2, to end the game with a 10-6 advantage.  Layman, Cushman, and Leja shared the Allegheny lead with two shots apiece, while Cho finished the afternoon with seven saves for DePauw, including six in the second half.

The Gators will now close out the season with a pair of home games that could prove pivotal in the NCAC standings.  The two-game homestand kicks off on Tues. Oct. 28, with a 4 p.m. match against Wooster at the Robertson Athletic Complex.
