MEADVILLE, Pa. - The visiting Yeomen of Oberlin College spoiled Homecoming for Allegheny, defeating the Gators 37-9 in front of a rain-soaked crowd at Frank B. Fuhrer FIeld.
Oberlin out-gained Allegheny 521-219 in total offense, and scored the game's final 23 points in the second half to cruise to the win.
Allegheny looked primed to find the scoreboard on its second possession of the game, taking over inside the Oberlin 30 after a kick catch interference penalty on a Yeomen punt.
Jon Nigro completed three passes for 28 yards to bring the ball inside the Oberlin 12, but the drive would stall, and a fourth down field goal attempt missed to keep the game scoreless with 6:20 left in the quarter.
The teams would then trade punts over the next several minutes, until the Gators used the ground game to take the lead in the opening minutes of the second quarter. On their first play of the quarter, Nigro found
Andrew Niklaus for a 13-yard gain to bring the ball near midfield. Junior
Nick Deichler then took over, carrying the ball on six of the next seven plays, capped off with a four-yard touchdown run. The extra point was missed, and the Gators led 6-0 with 10:39 remaining in the half.
Oberlin answered back quickly, scoring 14 unanswered points, on a pair of long touchdown passes to Justin Cruz, one for 29 yards and the other 44, to go up 14-7 with just over four minutes left until the break.
The Gators again kept it on the ground, and entered halftime with the momentum.
Jake Wilson ran five times for 26 yards, and the Gators advanced inside the Yeomen 20. The drive would stall, but
Ben Ziolkowski would hit a 33-yard field goal in the closing seconds of the half to make the score 14-9 at the intermission.
It was as close as the hosts would get, however, as Oberlin took control for the final 30 minutes of play. The Yeomen opened the second half by driving 60 yards in eight plays, capped off with Poggliali's third touchdown pass to Cruz, to make the score 21-9 with 11:08 left in the third. Allegheny's next two possessions ended in a punt and interception, and the Yeomen would tack on another touchdown as the third quarter wound to a close. The visitors embarked on a 12-play, 78-yard drive that spanned 6:16 and was capped off by a six-yard touchdown run by Joseph Myrick to up their lead to 28-9 at the end of the third quarter.
After Oberlin tacked on a field goal on its first trip of the fourth quarter to go up 31-9, the Gators tried to cut into the lead, embarking on a long trip into Yeomen territory. However, Oberlin would pick off a Gator pass in the end zone to quash the scoring threat, and then closed out the day's scoring with a 26-yard touchdown run by Kahlil Rivers with 1:14 left in regulation.
Deichler ran for a team-high 54 yards on a 11 carries, including his second quarter touchdown, while Nigro finished the day by completing eight of 17 passes for 70 yards.
Niklaus led the offense with three receptions for 28 yards, while
Derrick Emigh caught two passes for 28 yards. Defensively,
Nick Murgo led the Gators in tackles for the fifth time this season, finishing with 12 stops, while
Ryan Sherry had seven tackles, including two for loss and a strip sack.
Cruz had a monster game for the victorious Yeomen, making 14 catches for 242 yards, as Poggiali completed 20 of 24 for 283 yards. Rivers ran for a game-high 119 yards on 23 tries, while defensively, Oberlin's Bennett Jackson led his team with 10 tackles.
The Gators will now look to snap their five-game losing skid on Saturday, Oct. 18, hosting NCAC foe DePauw University at 1 p.m. at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.
