Named after 1906 alum Andrew Wells Robertson, the state-of-the-art Robertson Athletic & Recreation Complex encompasses the home facilities of the baseball, cross country, field hockey, football, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, and track and field teams.
Â
Originally known as College Field, the complex was named after Andrew Wells Robertson in 1962 to honor the year he was named Chairman Emeritus of the Allegheny Board of Trustees. Robertson purchased additional acreage along Park Avenue to supplement land originally donated in 1910 by John F. Eberhart, Class of 1853. In addition to donating land, Robertson underwrote the cost of developing the athletic field. A beautiful and spacious venue for intercollegiate athletics, Robertson saw that the natural setting was preserved by having shrubbery and trees removed during construction replanted elsewhere on campus. Â
The hub of the Robertson Athletic Complex is Frank B. Fuhrer Field, current home of Gator football, track and field, and men's lacrosse. Originally constructed in 1949, the stadium received a major facelift thanks to a major donation by 1948 Allegheny graduate and Hall of Fame member, Frank B. Fuhrer. As a part of that facelift, it received a brand new FieldTurf surface, full lighting, renovations and expansion to locker room facilities, and an eight-lane Olympic style track. A new sound system was installed in August 2014, before the field was again resurfaced in July 2015 with the most modern FieldTurf available, measuring approximately 110 yards long by 75 yards wide.
The eight-lane track surrounding Frank B. Fuhrer Field was upgraded in 2024. The terracotta-colored track was replaced with a blue surface to match Allegheny's colors.Â
The stadium features bleacher seating on both sides, with a capacity of 3,700, while a spacious, two-story press box offers high speed wireless internet connections adequate for broadcasting and media needs. In 2025, the press box was renovated and dedicated to the late Victor P. "Vic" Kress, Class of 1960 and 2025 Hall of Fame inductee. Kress, a former Meadville Tribune sports columnist and local radio broadcaster served as a color commentary for, provided color commentary for many Gator football games at Furher Field.
Two large locker rooms are located underneath the bleacher seating on the press-box side, while a connecting building also features a number of full-sized locker rooms, as well a newly-refurbished athletic training room and equipment storage. A new, 10,000-square-foot facility is currently under construction and will feature coaches' offices, a locker room, and meeting space for the Allegheny football team.
