Jared Luteran recently wrapped up his 11th season as the head men’s and women’s tennis coach at Allegheny.  Named the North Coast Athletic Conference’s men’s Coach of the Year in both 2007 and 2013, Luteran has seen the Gators earn 59 All-NCAC laurels (35 men/24 women) during his career, while the Gators have combined to earn over 30 ITA All-Academic honors.  Luteran, a native of Olmsted Falls, Ohio, was a three-time conference champion during his playing career at West Virginia Wesleyan College, where he was hired as the head coach immediately following his graduation with a degree in public relations.  He led the Bobcats to a pair of undefeated seasons, and was twice named the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.

What is your fondest memory as a student-athlete?
Winning three conference championships.

What is your fondest memory during your time at Allegheny?
For the men, defeating Denison in the NCAC tournament, and for the women, when we defeated Oberlin in the conference tourney.

What brought you to Allegheny?
It was a great fit, and had absolutely everything I was looking for in my next head coaching job.

If you could coach another sport for one day, what would it be?
Football.  I absolutely love the sport, and the coaching style is so much different than tennis.

Do you have any personal pre-match routines?
I wear a neck tie for every single home match.  That is the only time all year that I wear a tie.

What is your favorite road trip movie?
“Anchorman.”  We’ve probably watched it on the bus every year since it came out.

How about your least favorite?
“Ratatouille.”  I watch enough cartoon movies with my own children.

Favorite band/music artist?
There are so many.  Langhorne Slim, Pennywise, Social Distortion, Deer Tick, Frank Turner, Clutch… and many more.

What is your pre-match pump-up song?
“Stop” by Jane’s Addiction, and “Caboose” by Snapcase.

What is your favorite television show?
Parenthood and Mike and Mike.

What is your favorite pro sports team?
Any team from Cleveland, especially the Browns.

Who is your favorite athlete?
Roger Federer.

What is your favorite book?
“Walden” by Henry David Thoreau, and “Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer.

Dream vacation?
Camping in the wild, particularly in Alaska.

You can choose three dinner guests- who would they be?
Henry Rollins, Henry David Thoreau, Maynard James Keenan.

You can choose one historical sports event to go back in time and attend- what would it be?
The 1964 NFL Championship won by the Browns, since it’s probably the last time it will ever happen.

Top item on your bucket list?
Attend Wimbledon.

Describe Allegheny in three words or less
Cares about students!

Who has been your greatest influence during your coaching career?
Don Stevens, who was my private coach when I was a junior player.

What is the top piece of advice you would give to an incoming freshman student-athlete?
Bust your tail during your first semester so you get off to a good start.  Don’t put yourself in a hole with your GPA.

What is the top piece of advice you’d give someone who plans to pursue a career in coaching?
Never stop learning.
