MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny College men's soccer team continued its strong start in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play as a goal from junior defender
Aaron Donahoe was the lone tally in the Gators' 1-0 win over No. 25 Denison this afternoon.
Allegheny (3-6-2, 2-0-1 NCAC) is the first to put a dent into Denison's (9-1-1, 1-1-1 NCAC) unbeaten record this season despite being outshot, 14-6. The Big Red also generated seven corner kick opportunities to the Gators' three, but couldn't find an answer for senior goalkeeper
Jake Pugliese, who notched the fourth shutout of his career with five saves.
The Gators had a prime scoring chance in the 23rd minute when a through ball was played towards sophomore forward
Tolossa Hassan. Hassan had a beat on it as Denison goalkeeper Blake Schach tried to sweep it away, but Schach dragged Hassan down to earn a yellow card and keep the match scoreless.
Junior midfielder
Jack Walsh almost broke through in the 55th minute, but his attempt in the box was gloved by Schach.
Allegheny's game-winner came in the 85th minute after its counter attack forced a throw-in from near the right corner kick area. Junior midfielder
Liam McNamee lofted a dangerous ball into the box, meeting the head of freshman defender
Liam McKersie. The ricochet scurried past Schach and trickled near the goal line, where Donahoe was waiting to slot home his third goal of the season.
Denison looked for a quick response over the remaining five minutes, but two shot attempts were blocked in the box and another was kicked wide.
Allegheny will remain at home for a midweek tilt with Hiram next. The match between the Gators and Terriers is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14.
