BUFFALO, N.Y. - Freshman goalkeeper
Tara Lynch made seven saves in her collegiate debut, while senior
Faith Robinson scored her second goal in as many games, to lift the Gators to their sixth consecutive win, a 1-0 triumph at Buffalo State.
Tara LynchFive minutes into the second half, Robinson collected a rebound in front and chipped it home for her third goal of the season. Lynch made the lead hold up, making three saves in the first half and four in the second frame to post the Gators' third shutout win of the year.
The game looked to take an offensive theme from the outset, as the two clubs combined for six shots over the first 14 minutes of action. However, none of the attempts found the back of the net, with Lynch making her first two collegiate saves over the span. After the fast start, the game turned into a defensive battle, as the two squads combined to attempt just four shots over the final 30 minutes of the half, and the game entered the intermission scoreless.
Lynch made her fourth save of the day two minutes into the second half, and the Gators quickly countered. At the 49:26 mark,
Jessie Thiessen put a blast on goal that was saved by Bengal keeper Jessica McCarey, but the rebound came to Robinson who buried it home for the all important first goal.
Buffalo State looked to answer right back, but Lynch made a pair of saves in a 90-second span and the Gators then thwarted a Bengal corner kick with 30 minutes remaining to preserve the lead. The game would revert back to a defensive struggle for the next several moments, with neither team posting a shot until a pair of Bengal efforts in the 84th minute went wide, allowing Allegheny to leave western New York with the win.
The two teams combined for just 17 shots in the defensive-minded game, with Buffalo State holding an 11-6 advantage, marking the first time during the six-game winning streak in which the Gators were out-shot. Five different Allegheny players were credited with at least one attempt, with freshman
Sarah Donohue leading the way with two.
The win moved the Gators to 6-2 on the year, their best start to a season since the 2010 squad began 12-0-3. They will return to action on Sat. Sept. 20, when they welcome SUNY-Oneonta to the Robertson Athletic Complex for a 1 p.m. match.
