McClurg won four letters in basketball, and four letters in tennis.  He played guard in basketball and number two singles in tennis. 

 

In 1927-28 Allegheny had the best basketball team in the area and “Bill” was the star of that team.  When Allegheny defeated the University of Pittsburgh at Pittsburgh, he scored almost as many points as the entire Pittsburgh squad. 

 

That same year, McClurg led the state district in scoring.  He was also the leading scorer in the district in 1924 and 1926, and was named to the All-Conference team in 1923-1927. 

 

n addition to serving as co-captain for the tennis and basketball teams, McClurg took on the responsibility of president for the Phi Gama Delta Fraternity and was class vice-president in his junior year. 

After leaving Allegheny, McClurg took the position at Springdale High School as the coach of the basketball, football, and baseball teams for one year.  He then moved to Oakmont High School coaching the same sports for three years, and finally, he coached basketball at Avalon High School for five years. 

 

He retired from coaching in 1956 and became a district sales manager in Pittsburgh until 1970.
