Sue McQuiston excelled in the javelin event during her time at Allegheny, earning All-American honors in both her freshman and sophomore years. She was also a member of three straight NCAC Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship teams in 1992, 1993, and 1994.
At the May 1992 NCAC Championships at Denison, McQuiston, a then- freshman, placed second just behind teammate Jennifer Eddy with a throw of 120 feet, 3 inches. Later that same month, McQuiston finished fifth at the NCAA Division III Championships with a toss of 128’ 11”. A year later in 1993, McQuiston won the NCAC title at Ohio Wesleyan with a throw of 125’ 3”. She went on to place eighth in the javelin at the national championships with a toss of 125’ 11” and earn her second straight All-American finish in the javelin. McQuiston, at that time, became only one of four Allegheny female track and field student-athletes to repeat as All-Americans in one event.
On April 9, 1994 at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational, McQuiston became an NCAA Division III Provisional Qualifier with a throw of 128’ 7”. A month later on May 6-7 during the NCAC Championships at Case Western Reserve, McQuiston defended her 1993 javelin title with a throw of 124’ 4”. She went on to compete at Nationals, held in May at North Central in Naperville, Illinois where she finished 13th in the nation with a toss of 117’ 10”.
In 1995, McQuiston, a then-senior, claimed her third straight NCAC javelin title with a throw of 122’ 5”.
