Small, a quarterback on the football team from 1971 through 1974, was highly touted as a track athlete at Allegheny, winning four letters in both sports before graduating in 1975.

A native of Turnersville, NJ, and a graduate of Washington Twp. High School, Small was a starter all four years (34 consecutive games) for the Gator grid teams.  He was an All-Conference selection in the PAC after his sophomore and senior seasons.  Those same two years saw him win All-District and honorable mention All-State honors, and in 1974 he was an honorable mention All-American as selected by the Associated Press.  He won the Duffy Weber Back of the Year Award at Allegheny in 1974.

Statistically, Small had the numbers to support the honors he won.  He led the Presidents’ Athletic Conference in total offense in 1972 (1,222 yards for an average of 135.7 yards a game) and in 1974 (1,237 yards, 154.6 yards a game).  He finished his career second to Hall of Famer Mike Ganey in total offense with 3, 946 yards and in passing with 3,012 yards.  His 24 career touchdown passes are also second on the all-time Gator list.

The highlight of Small’s grid career came in 1974 as the Gators posted a 7-1 record and won the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.

Small’s credentials as a track athlete are also outstanding.  A quarter-miler, Small was several times an All-Conference performer both in the open 440 or as a member of the Allegheny mile relay teams.  He was the team’s leading scorer in 1974 and 1975.  He qualified for the NCAA Division III championships in both 1974 and 1975 and turned in a best time in the 440 of :49.5

Since his graduation from Allegheny, Small has gone on to receive his MBA in Finance from the University of New Hampshire and Bentley College in 1981- graduating with honors (3.6 GPA).  He joined the Boston Company in 1983 after two years in high tech and was recently promoted to vice president and manager of Private Banking Group’s Product Management Division, a 200-person unit which provides all operations, product and service delivery support for the 600-person business group.  The Boston Company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Shearson Lehman Hutton, Inc.

Small and his wife, the former Doris Chadbourne, are the parents of a daughter, Jennifer and a son, Christopher.
