Over his four years at Allegheny College, Bob Muth dominated Division III wrestling. But it took the Guys Mills, Pa. native until the sweet conclusion of his career to gain national fame.

Muth entered the 1983 Div. III national championship ranked first in the competition and carrying a year-long list of impressive credentials. He had yet to lose a single bout and was fresh off a heavyweight championship and Most Valuable Wrestler performance at the Presidents’ Athletic Conference championship, held at Allegheny. He had also picked up individual titles the Lebanon Valley, Edinboro and Allegheny Invitationals along the way. Muth dispatched of his first three opponents by a combined score of 25-9 to march into the final against Concordia’s 335-lb. mammoth, Malcolm McLeod.

Muth’s national championship also gave him the opportunity to represent Allegheny at the NCAA Div. I national championship. It came as no surprise when Muth was named 1983 recipient of the William Johnson Trophy as Allegheny Wrestler of the Year.

Muth’s career, however, certainly amounted to much more than just that one shining moment. He had worked to achieve his goal of national champion and on that trek accomplished a multitude of achievements. His climb to the top began his freshman year, when the highly-sought recruit from nearby Maplewood High School made the immediate impact expected of him, earning Allegheny Freshman of the Year kudos. That season, Muth began an improbable run which would see him capture the heavyweight championship of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference four consecutive years. He went 30-3-2 in his junior year of 1981-82, capped by an honorable mention All-American honor after a seventh place finish at the NCAA championship. Bob Muth’s career record at Allegheny is an incredible 106-14-6.
