Raymond H. Cox, Class of ‘58
Raymond H. Cox has been selected as one of the 16 charter members of Allegheny College’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
Cox was a swimming standout at Allegheny from 1954 through 1958.
A 1958 graduate of Allegheny with a bachelor of science degree in mathematics and chemistry, Cox earned four varsity letters on the swimming team and served as team captain his senior year. He was the first Alleghenian to earn All-American status in swimming.
Cox competed in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke, the 200-yard freestyle, the 200-yard individual medley, and the 400-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays. He was named All-American by Collegiate Swimming Coaches of America for the 200-yard backstroke in 1956, for the 100-yard backstroke in 1957, and for both events in 1958.
Undefeated in dual meet competition in four years (Gators won 39 meets) and undefeated in the Penn-Ohio Swimming Association competition in four years, Cox held individual records at ten pools for the 200-yard backstroke and records for the 120- and 160-yard individual medley and 220-yard freestyle.
Cox is a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. Originally from Meadville, Pa., Cox attended Meadville High School where he was named a Helms Foundation High School All-American in 1954. Cox was also the Pennsylvania State Champion in the 100-yard backstroke in 1954.
