Maropis was highly regarded in both football and baseball.

A graduate of Burgettstown High School, Maropis made his biggest impact in baseball where he signed a major league contract with the Chicago White Sox after being drafted in the 15th round following his junior year at Allegheny.

He put up outstanding numbers during his three years at Allegheny.  He was a three-time All Presidents’ Athletic Conference selection- as a centerfielder his freshman year and as a shortstop his sophomore and junior seasons.  He was the conference batting champion after his freshman and junior seasons.

As a junior, Maropis hit safely in every league game and finished the season with a .550 batting average.  In his three years in the PAC, Maropis hit safely in 27 of 31 league games.

Maropis holds the distinction of being the first right-handed hitting Gator to homer over the fence in right field.

He was an All-Conference cornerback his sophomore and junior seasons and was a Pittsburgh Press All-District Player and an All-State selection after his junior season.

In 1973, he led the Gators in tackles and interceptions and in 1974 he set what was then a PAC record for a 43-yard field goal.

Despite not being able to participate his senior season, Maropis was still honored as Allegheny’s Senior Athlete of the Year in 1976.

After three years in the Chicago White Sox farm system, Maropis went back to school and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh Dental School in 1981.  He currently has his own practice in Monroeville.

Maropis is married to the former Kathryn Ellen Stewart, Allegheny Class of 1978, and they are the parents of two sons, Peter and Matthew.
