A key cog in Allegheny softball’s consistent presence as a national powerhouse, Penny Whiteman Houghtaling is one of just three players in the team’s illustrious history to earn NCAA Division III All-American honors in three different seasons.
As a four-year starter in center field, she helped lead the Gators to three appearances in the NCAA Division III World Series, including a national runner-up finish in 1988.
From 1989-91 Penny was named First Team All-Central Region while leading Allegheny to three consecutive regional titles. In 1989, she led the Gators in batting, runs, and RBI while breaking the single-season school record with 58 hits. During her senior campaign she clubbed a program-record five hits against Edinboro.
After graduating from Allegheny with a B.S. in Math and a minor in Biology, Penny received a Master’s degree in Biostatistics from the University of Pittsburgh. She went on to manage her family’s 36-lane bowling center in Hornell, N.Y., where she met her husband, Bill. They moved to Ohio where she has worked at the Cleveland Clinic for the past 14 years in cardiovascular research as Lead Biostatistician of the Heart and Vascular Institute. Working in collaboration with world renowned heart surgeons and cardiologists, Penny has authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications.
