Competing in the nation's most competitive swimming conference, Patrick shined for the Gators during the latter half of the 1980's. Earning All-American honors all four years, Stewart helped lead the Gators to four straight top-20 finishes at the NCAA Division III Championships, including a seventh-place effort in 1986. He was a seven-time All-American, and reached All-America status in six individual events. Securing five first-place finishes at the NCAC Championships, Stewart was an eight-time All-NCAC performer, and twice set the conference record in the 200 I.M.
He graduated as the school record holder in four different events, and, nearly 25 years after graduating, his name still appears all over the team record book. His 1989 time of 4:07.80 in the 400 IM remains tops all time, while he currently sits in second in the 200 fly, third in the 200 I.M., and fifth in the 100 Fly. He was named the 1989 Allegheny College Male Athlete of the Year.
