Varano was halfback and a four-year letterman for the Gator football team. Varano’s offensive performances for the Gators were legendary. Several times he left the field with an injury, only to come back later in the game and spark the Gators.

Varano, a resident of Wynnewood was named honorary Professor of Urology at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1983.
