Nathan Smith Class of 2001
A tremendous golf talent who has continued to make national headlines beyond his college career, Nathan Smith was a sensational student-athlete with a remarkable four-year run at Allegheny.
Capping his undergraduate experience with a coveted NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, Nathan was also a two-time Academic All-America recipient. The 2001 national runner-up, he was also a four-time NCAA All-American and a two-time NCAA Regional Player of the Year. Nathan earned medalist honors at the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament on three occasions while leading the Gators to three league titles. The team earned a top-10 finish at the NCAA Championships in each of his four years, including a third-place finish in 1998.
Since his graduation, Nathan has developed into one of the best and most recognized amateur golfers in the world. In 2010, he captured the USGA Mid-Am Championship for a record-tying third time. By successfully defending the Robert T. Jones Memorial Mid-Amateur Trophy, Nathan recently made his third appearance at the U.S. Masters Tournament. At the 2010 Masters, he finished two strokes off the cut despite finishing ahead of world notables: Justin Leonard, Stuart Cink, Jim Furyk, and Vijay Singh. In doing so, he also established the lowest two-day score by a player invited to the tournament as the reigning Mid-Am champion.
Nathan made his mark on the national golf scene in 2003 when he became the youngest player to ever win the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship. Nathan, who was paired with golf legend Arnold Palmer at the 2004 Masters in Arnold’s last round at Augusta National.
