M. Lawrence Judd, Class of 1925

 

M. Lawrence Judd was a football, track and field, and basketball standout from 1921 through 1925.

 

A 1925 graduate of Allegheny with a degree in philosophy and education, Judd earned four varsity letters in football, four letters in track and field, and two letters in basketball and served as captain of the 1924-24 basketball team and of the 1925 track squad for the Blue and Gold.

 

The versatile student-athlete not only held the College record in both the indoor and outdoor high jump, but also competed in the javelin throw, the hammer throw, the discus throw, the shotput, the broad jump, and the pole vault while on the track and field squad for four years.  He played end on the football squad four years and center on the cage team three years.

 

In football, the Blue and Gold enjoyed season records of 3-4-1, 6-3, 7-1, and 5-2, respectively, while Judd was one of its stars.  In Judd’s junior season when the squad went 7-1, the team tied the College record of most wins in a single season which was set in 1899 and tied in 1902 and 1913 and also tied in 1968 and in 1974, but has not yet been surpassed.  Judd was coached by Thomas V. Davies in his senior year.

 

Judd was a three-year member of the Block A Club, a two-year member of the Philosophy and Education Club, a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, and a member of Kappa Phi Kappa honorary.

 

Originally from Meadville, Pa., Judd attended Meadville High School.
