The late Horace T. Lavely, Sr., has been selected as one of the six inductees in Allegheny College’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
Lavely won letters in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He played right halfback in football, first base in baseball, guard in basketball, and he ran the 440-yard dash in track.
As the right halfback on the Gator football squad, Lavely led the team in scoring in 1910 with 25 points, and in 1911 with 40 points. Chosen as the captain of the team in his junior year, he led the Blue and Gold to a record of 3-1-1. In his final season in 1911, he led the Gators to a 10-6 upset over West Virginia, and to a record of 4-4-1.
He also was the starting first baseman for Allegheny’s baseball team in 1910-1912. He led the team to records of 4-1-1, 4-4, and an undefeated mark of 3-0 in his senior year (1912).
Lavely graduated in 1912, and went on to receive his S.T.B. degree from Boston University School of Theology in 1916. He served as a pastor in Iowa in 1916-1920, and received his D.Th. degree in 1938.
In 1928-1956 he was a professor of philosophy at Allegheny.
Lavely’s son, Horace T. Lavely, Jr. ’39, also attended Allegheny. He served as the captain of the 1938 football team, and was the leading scorer with 32 points in 1937.
