Frank B. Fuhrer, Class of ‘48
Frank B. Fuhrer was a basketball, soccer, softball, baseball, and golf standout at Allegheny from 1943 through 1948.
A 1948 graduate of Allegheny with a bachelor of arts degree, Fuhrer won 11 varsity letters at Allegheny, and served as captain of both the soccer team and the basketball team in his senior season.
As Allegheny did not have baseball as a varsity sport until 1947 (it began in 1881 but was disbanded after the 1915 season), Fuhrer played on the softball squad in his early collegiate career.
Fuhrer won the Meadville amateur Golf Championship by defeating the best of the local golfing talent to take the finals and the city title with a score of 69.
Since becoming successful as founder and owner of Frank B. Fuhrer Holdings, Inc., Fuhrer has entered the sports world in a different manner than participant. Fuhrer was owner of the Pittsburgh Triangles Professional Tennis Team from 1974 through 1976, and he has been owner of the Pittsburgh Spirit Indoor Soccer Team since 1979.
The Triangles recorded the best record in the league with a 92-40 mark for a winner percentage of .697. The Triangles also advanced to the playoffs in each of the three years and won the league championship in 1975.
In its first year of competition, Pittsburgh Spirit commanded a 13-game winning streak which catapulted the team to a trip to the playoffs, where the squad paced second in its division.
In four years of competition in professional sports, Fuhrer’s teams have never had a losing season and have never failed to advance to the playoffs.
Fuhrer also sponsors the Frank B. Fuhrer Memorial Challenge Cup, which is one of the leading golf events in the Western Pennsylvania area, featuring top professionals against top amateurs annually.
Fuhrer is a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.
Originally from East Brady, Pa., Fuhrer attended East Brady High School.
