Oberlin Open Results
OBERLIN, Ohio—The Allegheny College women's tennis team opened up play at the 2017 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Tournament, hosted by Oberlin College Friday (Sept. 22).
In the opening round of the Doubles Championship,
Sarah Casey and
Miharu Koh faced Jennifer Stroyne and Carlye Campagna of John Carroll University. The Gator duo took a 7-5 lead but the Blue Streaks rattled off three straight wins to move ahead, 8-7. Casey and Koh regained their footing, winning the next set to move to a tiebreaker. Their momentum from the previous game carried over as they were able to pick up a 7-2 win, advancing to the second round.
In their second round match, Casey and Koh faced Nithya Kanagasegar and Madeleine Paolucci from Case Western Reserve University, seeded fifth in the tournament. The Gator kept up with the fifth-seed for most of the match but ultimately fell 8-5.
Gaby DeLeon and
Amanda Ress Liere also found success in their first round match of the Doubles Championship. DeLeon and Ress Liere advanced to second round action as they cruised to an 8-2 win over Katrin Gurvich and Lauren Beier of Case Western Reserve.
In their second round match, DeLeon and Ress Liere faced the tournament's number three seed, Claire Handa and Alyssa Rudin of The University of Chicago. The Chicago pair picked up the win 8-1.
The Gators were also in singles action Friday. DeLeon and Ress Liere competed in the ITA Singles Championship while Koh and Casey competed in the Oberlin Open.
DeLeon faced Devin Gramley of North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) foe Denison University. The two went back-and-forth in both sets. The opening set went into a tiebreaker where Gramley was able to break to take it 7-5. In the second set, Gramley broke once more to take it 7-5.
Ress Liere faced the fifth-seed of the tournament, Majorie Antohi of the Chicago. Antohi picked up the win 6-0, 6-.1.
Koh went to three sets against Kaleigh Cummins of Ohio Northern University. The opening set went to a tiebreaker which Cummins won 7-4. Koh was able to bounce back in the second set, breaking Cummins to win 6-4, setting up the tiebreaker. Cummins got ahead early in the tiebreaker, winning 10-4 to seal the match.
Also in the Oberlin Open, Casey faced Morgan Wagers of fellow NCAC school the College of Wooster. The close first set went to tiebreakers, which Wagers won 7-4. Her momentum from winning the tiebreaker carried over to the second set as she took a 5-0 lead. Casey fought back, winning five straight games to tie it at five. Wagers earned the first match points but Casey staved it off and forced a tiebreaker. Casey cruised in the tiebreaker, taking it 7-1, to set up a third set super breaker. In the extra session, Casey continued to play well, taking it 10-5 to wrap up the match.
The Gators return to action at the ITA Tournament Saturday (Sept. 23).
