Piper Ties Single Game Gator Point Record in OT Win Over Wooster

MEADVILLE, Pa.--  The Allegheny College women's lacrosse team overcame a second half deficit to defeat the College of Wooster 19-18 in overtime Wednesday (April 26) in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play.

Lexi Einsig scored the gamewinner for the Gators in the extra session.  The victory was the first for the Gators over Wooster in Meadville.

For the game, Shelby Piper tallied 12 points on eight goals, four assists.  Her 12 points tied the Gators single game record.  She now joins McKenzie Bell and Jensen Paterson in that category.

The Gators took control early, scoring the game's first four goals.  Piper scored the opening goal of the game, less than five minutes in, off a feed from Alex Zielinski.  Two minutes later, Piper scored once again to make it 2-0.  Piper tallied her third point of the game on an assist to Jessie Thiessen.  Einsig then scored on a drive to make it 4-0.  However, the Fighting Scots fought back to take the lead.  Laura Pap scored three goals as Jordan Stone, Emma Lawrence and Helena Enders also found the back of the net as they took a 6-4 lead with 12 minutes to play in the half.

After a Gator timeout, the Fighting Scots added one more to make it 7-4.  Einsig scored on a free position goal to stop the Fight Scots run.   After Papp scored once again for Wooster, Maddie Olson answered with a free position goal to make it 8-6.  The Fighting Scots tacked on a pair of goal to bring it to 10-6.  Alexa Maloney scored an unassisted goal with just under three minutes to play, but Enders scored for Wooster as they took an 11-7 lead into the half.

The Gators struck first in the second half.  Zielinski threw a pass in front of the net to Piper who one-timed it in to cut the lead to three. However, Wooster responded with a pair of goals to grow their lead to 13-8.  After the Wooster goals, the Gators fought back, scoring three straight.  Piper and Zielinski scored unassisted, followed by a Maloney goal assisted by Einsig, bringing the score to 14-12.

Wooster extended their lead to 15-12 midway through the half.  The back and forth play continued as an Olson goal, assisted by Piper, was answered by the Fighting Scots.  With under nine minutes to play in regulation, Piper scored two straight free-position goals to bring the game within one, 16-15.

Once again, the Fighting Scots responded with a goal to match the Gators and extend their lead to 17-15.  With less than five minutes to play, Piper found Einsig for a man-up goal, cutting the deficit to one.  Less than two minutes later, Piper scored the equalizer for the Gators on an unassisted goal.

In the final two minutes, Wooster took the lead once more on a goal by Enders.  However, Piper came through for the Gators in clutch, tying the game on a free-position shot with 48 seconds to play.  The Gators had a chance to win the game in the closing seconds but were unable to find the back of the net, sending the game into overtime.

Wooster had the first shot in the overtime session, but coughed up the ball on a free position attempt.  After the Gators cleared it, Einsig was able to drive in and beat the goalie, giving the Gators the OT win.

Piper finished the game with eight goals and four assists.  Einsig scored four times, while assisting on one more.  Maloney found the back of the net three times while Zielinski scored once and assisted on two more.  Olson had a pair of goals while Thiessen had one.

In addition to her offensive performance, Einsig had four groundballs and four draw controls.  Thiessen also had four draw controls while causing three turnovers.

Kaelin Clogan picked up the win in net for the Gators.  She made five saves while grabbing three groundballs.

The Gators close out the regular season at home Saturday (April 29) with a Senior Day tilt Ohio Wesleyan University.
