Doubles Sweep Fuels Gators to Win Over Mercyhurst

MEADVILLE, Pa.  – The Allegheny men's tennis team stormed to an 8-1 win over Mercyhurst Tuesday at Robertson Athletic Complex.  Sophomore Alex Hurtuk and freshman Tyler Triolo led the way, winning both their respective singles matches in convincing fashion.  The Gators also swept their three doubles matches.

The top-flight doubles team of junior Patrick Cole and sophomore Sam Stephenson won an 8-1 decision over the top-doubles team of Travis Beck and Robert Rizea from Mercyhurst (0-2).  The Gators (2-0) completed the sweep of doubles with an 8-3 win from the No. 2 doubles team of Triolo and junior Frank Mosconi and an 8-1 victory for Hurtuk and sophomore Daniel Conroy in their No. 3 spot.

Hurtuk won his second-flight singles match, 7-5, 6-4 to lead the Gators to five victories in six singles matches.  All five wins for the Gators game in straight sets, including a 6-1, 6-0 decision for freshman and No. 5 singles Amadeus Nunaley-Connor and a 6-1, 6-1 win for freshman Thomas Manning, who played in the No. 6 spot.  Triolo won his third-flight singles match 6-3, 6-3, as Mosconi came away from No. 4 singles with a 7-5, 6-3 win.  The lone loss for Allegheny in singles was Patrick Cole, who fell in top-flight singles, 6-3, 6-3.

The Gators take the court again on Wednesday at 5p.m. at Robertson Complex to take on John Carroll.
